Introduction :
- Malaak Shabazz was born in 1965 in Harlem, Manhattan, New York. Malaak is an activist for equal rights for women, and colored people. She also supports causes regarding other issues faced by women like violence and sexual harassment.
Personal Life : Parents, Family and Education
- Malaak has a twin sister named Malika Shabazz. Malaak’s mother Betty Shabazz was pregnant with the twins when Malaak’s father was murdered. Malaak Shabazz’s father is known as Malcolm X and is famous for his work as an activist for equal rights between white people and colored people during the apartheid in the United States.
- All of Malaak’s siblings were homeschooled. Her mother Betty had 6 daughters with Malcolm. In order of birth, Malaak’s sisters are: Attallah born in 1958 and named thus after Atila, then Qubilah, born in 1960 and named after Kublai Kan; Ilyasah, born in 1962 and named after Elijah Muhammad, Gamilah Lumumba in 1964 named after Patrice Lumumba and her and her twin sister named after their father, since they were born after he died.
- Malaak’s father converted to Islam and married Betty who is from a Muslim family. Malaak’s upbringing was very religious but also her mother highly valued education. In Malaak’s household was important to read a chapter of a book daily, to know all world leaders and presidents and to follow world news.
- It is said that tragedy has always followed Malaak’s family from the death of her father. A strong family dispute took place in court when Malaak’s twin sister Malika sued Malaak and her sister Ilyasah over the family state. This state is said to be worth over 1.4 million dollars not counting some of Malcolm’s yet unpublished work which may be invaluable. Malaak’s twin alleged poor management that led to tax raises and excessive spending. It is said that an argument of mental incapacity was also used in the case. This shows how deeply shattered the family relationships are after Malcolm’s death.
- Another incident in the family was when Qubilah, the second oldest sister was accused of hiring a hitman to kill a man named Farakhan. She faced federal charges and was arrested. Her mother said to the press that her daughter had been framed.
- And the last of the streaks of misfortunes, that add to the said tragedy that follows Malaak’s family, was when Betty’s grandson Malcom was put in Juvenile prison. He was accused of setting fire to the apartment where Betty lived and in which fire she died.

- Malaak Shabazz describes herself as “self-employed.”
- She has worked for the United Nations for more than three decades. Here she worked as President of the Sub-Commission on Human Rights for the Elimination of Racism and Discrimination. However, she also addressed other international human rights issues like violence against women.
- Malaak also helps orphan children from natural disasters in the organization Worldwide Orphans (WOO).
- Malaak also helps raise awareness towards the situation of the refugees fleeing the Middle East.

- Malaak has attended the 16th Session of the Work Group on People of African Descent that took place in Switzerland. She also attended the XIX International Congress of Rupestre Art IFRAO 2015 in Spain.
