BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — A new baby red panda named Spring was born at Zoo Boise over the summer Boise Parks and Recreation announced Friday.
Spring is a baby girl born in June with her parents Dolly and Winston. This is the couple's fifth litter.
Baby Spring has been spending her her first weeks in the den with her mother. Over the next few months she will be exploring the exhibit for visitors to catch a glimpse.
Zoo Boise says Dolly has been doing a fantastic job of caring for Spring. Zoo Boise staff members are giving her as much privacy as possible, which they say ensures that she does not become stressed and continues to take care of her new baby. Weekly check-ups by zoo staff have shown that Spring is healthy and growing.
The cub’s parents, Dolly and Winston, have been matched as part of the Red Panda Species Survival Program. The SSP is one of the Association of Zoos and Aquarium’s many conservation programs that serves as a breeding program fro endangered or threatened species.
"This red panda birth is very exciting and significant for Zoo Boise," said Boise Parks and Recreation.
