Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh have reportedly been dating for half a decade now. And in these past five years, they have always been the center of attention for many. For a relationship that has been going strong since so long, you’d expect the couple to be spotted around frequently. But, this is not the case with Ranveer and Deepika. Instead, they have always tried to keep things private which is also a massive reason for the public being so interested in the two. So, we give you a complete timeline of all the major moments in the relationship of Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh:
It all started back in 2012, Ranveer Singh met Deepika Padukone for the first time at an event abroad. He saw Deepika wearing a stunning silver colour gown and still remembers the day to this date. During the promotions of their film Ramleela, Deepika and Ranveer were asked what they felt about each other when they met for the very first time. Ranveer replied saying, “The first time I saw her, I almost went flat!" He even recalled the silver dress she was wearing at the time. Once the interview was out, a fan asked Ranveer on social media saying “How can you remember something that happened so long ago, so well?” to which Ranveer replied with a tweet saying, “How can one possibly forget that sight?! #dropdeadgorgeous #5yearsofRanveerSingh"
Here is a picture of Deepika Padukone from the event at which she met Ranveer Singh, and we have to agree with him. How can anyone forget how gorgeous Deepika Padukone looked that night? Check out the picture below.
The very same year Deepika and Ranveer began shooting for their first film together which was Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ramleela. The movie went on to release in 2013. During the shoot of Ramleela, rumours began to float that Deepika and Ranveer had started dating. Although, the two actors denied these rumours at the time, Ranveer revealed in an interview with a tabloid that he grew close to Deepika while they were shooting for Ramleela, “"I can't stop people from jumping to conclusions. We grew close on a personal level during the filming of Ram Leela and I look forward to working with her in Bajirao Mastani.” Interestingly, Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone weren’t the first choice for Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Pakistani actor Imran Abbas was approached for the role of Ram and Kareena Kapoor Khan was the first choice for the role of Leela. But aren’t’ we glad? Although it would have been interesting to see Deepika romance this handsome hunk or Ranveer do Lahu Muh Lag Gaya with the beautiful Kareena, the sizzle that Deepika and Ranveer created on the silver screen, cannot be paralleled. The sizzling chemistry accompanied with some amazing performances ensured that Ramleela went on to be a blockbuster. Not only did it bolster Ranveer’s position in the industry but also gave Deepika the tag of the 500 crore heroine owing to the success of the three other films of her which released in 2013 - Yeh Jawaani hai Deewani, Chennai Express and Race 2. One of the highlights of the film was that steamy lip lock between Deepika and Ranveer. Ranveer also was asked in an interview with a leading tabloid that whether it was the hottest kiss ever filmed in a Hindi film, to which he replied saying, “Yes, I think so. I hope that there will be no objection to the kiss because it’s a beautiful kiss. I hope they don’t cut the duration because it’s a long kiss. It’s the best kiss you’ll ever see in a Hindi movie.”
Actors are often away from home for months as they are tied with the shooting of their film. So, when Deepika was shooting for Finding Fanny in Goa, Ranveer was often spotted visiting her on the sets of the film. He even had a small cameo in the film in which he plays the late husband of Deepika. Director Homi Adjania mentioned that Deepika Padukone had no idea about the fact that Ranveer will be seen in a cameo, “Deepika had no idea about Ranveer’s cameo. Ranveer and I were chatting about this film and the idea of this cameo role came up. He liked it and agreed to do it. He came on the sets…we had fun doing it.” he said. Reportedly, Ranveer did the cameo completely free of cost.
On 8th January 2014, Farah Khan had hosted a birthday bash and invited the who’s who of the film industry for a gala celebration. After enjoying a wonderful evening, the two were spotted leaving the party along with Karan Johar and Manish Malhotra. Ranveer Singh, who is always more than open about his feelings had something big in store for the paparazzi who were waiting to get some pictures of the two. Deepika was spotted leaving the building hand in hand with Karan, while Ranveer followed her with a yellow flower in his hand which he had pulled out from a bouquet.
Ranveer has already played the role of a hopeless romantic in many of his films waled closely behind Deepika with his arms stretched, hoping that she will accept his token of love. While he did manage to grab Karan’s attention, Deepika kept walking ahead with a broad smile on her face. Without paying any attention to Ranveer and his cute gesture she kept walking ahead with Karan. After this adorable display of affection, Ranveer walked Deepika to her car.
In 2015, Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor were hosting an event during which, Arjun Kapoor told Ranveer Singh, “Woh Dekh Deepika, (Look, Deepika is there)” to which Ranveer Singh replied, “Tab se wahi toh dekh raha hoon, (I am looking at her only).”. But it doesn’t end here. Deepika came on stage to accept an award she was receiving, during which Ranveer got down on one knee to flatter her with his romantic poetry. He gave a not so subtle hint of their relationship when he sang “Ram chahe Leela, Leela Chahe Ram” from their movie Ramleela in 2013. While he was singing, a fan from the crowd scream, “I love you Deepika!” to which Ranveer replied, “Take it easy bro!”
Later that year, the two also came together for a magazine photoshoot. Since the moment the pictures got out, everyone couldn’t stop gushing about the chemistry of the two. In the interview, Ranveer mentioned, “Nobody looks at anything else when Deepika is in the frame”, adding playfully, “I wouldn’t!”.
Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone were again seen together in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani. Bajirao Mastani was a project which was extremely close to Bhansali. He had announced the film back in 2003, but delays occurred due to continuously changing star cast. Bhansali spent the next eleven years in development after the project was announced and revived it in 2015. Extensive research was done before moving into pre-production, which required the creation of twenty-two highly detailed sets, and numerous costumes and props to strengthen its opulence and high production value. Deepika’s and Ranveer’s chemistry clicked at the box-office again. The movie went on to be a massive commercial success. It managed to become the fourth highest grossing film of the year 2015. The film also went on to receive many accolades which include Best Director for Bhansali, Best Supporting Actress for Azmi, Best Cinematography for Chatterjee, and Best Art Direction. It received fourteen nominations at the 61st Filmfare Awards; the most for any film that year. Bajirao Mastani went on to win nine awards, more than any other film at the ceremony, including Best Film, Best Director for Bhansali, Best Actor for Singh, and Best Supporting Actress for Chopra. During the promotions of Bajirao Mastani, Ranveer spoke about his experience of working with Deepika Padukone, “I'm very confident in my abilities. I recognise the fact that she's going through a golden phase as an actor. She's given one solid performance after the other, starting with Lafangey Parinde, Break Ke Baad. I find her growth... her rapid growth had started since then. One power-packed performance after the other. It's my privilege that I get to work with her twice during this phase, in Ram-Leela and Bajirao Mastani. I trust her immensely, I know that she's one of the most generous actors that I've ever worked with. I know that I can surrender to her in a scene... just connect with her, be present with her, look into her eyes and really mean what I'm saying. She's an incredible performer. To have Piku and Tamasha in the same year as Bajirao Mastani is truly an incredible feat. She inspires me as a performer and I admire her tremendously as a person and an individual.” he said. After the release of Bajirao Mastani, Ranveer Singh had to chop off the moustache that he sported in the film for his role in Befikre. And it was Deepika Padukone herself who decided to do the needful. The two posted a video on social media in which, Deepika is seen chopping off Ranveer’s moustache with a pair of scissors. The video went viral on the internet as people couldn’t get over how cute the two of them are. In 2016, the two weren’t spotted as often together owing to a hectic schedule. But this fuelled speculation of a breakup of the two. However, towards the end of the year, the couple put all the speculation of a break up to bed as they were spotted walking hand in hand, as they left from Ambani’s birthday bash.
2017 was truly a landmark year for Deepika Padukone. As in 2017, she made her Hollywood debut with XXX: Return of the Xander Cage, which also starred Vin Diesel, Nina Dobrev, Donnie Yen and Ruby Rose in leading roles. Ranveer showed his support for her as he hosted a special premier of the film for the friends of their industry. At the premiere, Ranveer also shared how much the film mattered to him, "It is a proud moment for me. I am very excited about the night. It is a big Hollywood film, we have some special guests in the city. It is the premiere of 'XXX', starring Deepika, who is a special co-actor of mine and I am looking forward to watching the movie. Deepika is a gifted actor and an amazing movie star, someone whom I really admire. I am extremely proud of her," the actor said.
With Padmaavat, we saw Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone collaborate once again in a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film. The film went on to be a blockbuster with the box-office figures crossing the INR 300 crore mark. However, it was not all smooth sailing as Ranveer and Deepika along with the entire team of the film went through many hardships before the release of the film. The movie was initially set to release in November 2017 but faced constant threats from Karni Sena which resulted in the release being postponed indefinitely. In fact, Karni Sena had even reached the sets of Padmaavat while it was being shoot and threatened Sanjay Leela Bhansali to stop making the film. Another political party, which goes by the name of Shri Rajput Sabha filed for a nationwide ban on the release of the film. Shri Rajput Sabha also filed an FIR against Bhansali and called him a “habitual offender”. Ujjain MP Chintamani Malviya made a post on Facebook saying, “People like Bhansali do not understand any other language. People like him only understand the language of shoes. This country will not disrespect Rani Padmini. We will not tolerate any distortion of our history. Mental deformity of Bhansali would not be tolerated in the name of freedom of expression.” He also added, “If the film industry crosses its boundaries, then it should not be expected that the elected representatives will be within their limits [sic].” Matters went to as far as Deepika Padukone receiving death threats. But, during these hard times Deepika and Ranveer we’re always there for each other. Recently in an interview with a leading daily, Ranveer spoke about the death threats that we’re received by Deepika Padukone and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, “I was filled with rage. There’s no doubt about that. I had a very strong urge to act out, to speak out, but I was given strict instructions not to. And I had to respect that, because I was not at the forefront of this fight. It’s the prerogative of the producers, of the director. If they were explicitly telling me that me saying something or doing something is going to complicate things further, I don’t want to complicate their lives. I want to do my bit to make sure that this film gets made and it gets released. If this is what they are asking me to do, I have to abide by that.” the actor said.
Eventually, when Padmaavat was released Ranveer Singh’s performance took everyone by surprise. Many even went as far to declare that it was Ranveer Singh’s best performance so far. When Deepika was asked about the same, she said, "Yes and no. Because I don't know what more is in store for him. He's capable of so much. He has so much more to explore. Is it going to be his best till date? I hope so. In fact, I can't even say yes or no because I have not seen his work. We've not worked together in the film. That's why I feel like they've shot completely different film which him. I don't know what he has done. But I've seen what the audience has seen, which is the trailer. Yes, I hope for his sake that it's his best till date."
