The LoL Worlds 2022 Quarterfinals draw is a rematch-filled feast

August 2024 · 3 minute read

The League of Legends Worlds 2022 Group Stage has finally come to a close, and while the west struggled to make an impact, the LEC has at least seen its first seed in Rogue squeak through thanks to a dominant Week One performance. However, the European side will have quite the mountain to climb, as the Worlds 2022 Quarterfinals draw has not been kind to it.

In order to book its ticket to Atlanta for the Semifinals, Rogue will have to defeat LPL first seed JD Gaming in a best-of-five. The pair last matched up during the Worlds 2020 Group Stage, which saw Rogue defeated in both of the 30-minute ties.

If that’s not a spicy-enough rematch, then T1 and Royal Never Give Up have got you. The two teams have traded blows time and time again throughout League’s history. The last time Worlds was held in North America back in 2016, the two teams also matched up in the Quarterfinals. Back then, it was T1 that came out on top 3-1 – a scoreline it’d certainly be happy to replicate.

However, it’s RNG that has had the most recent laugh, having won the 2022 Mid-Season Invitational at T1’s expense after a five-game thriller in Reykjavik, Iceland. With pride on the line, as well as a Semifinals spot, RNG will be keen to assert its dominance over the LCK second seed once again.

It feels like Gen.G has had DWG KIA’s number all year long. The LCK first seed is 4-0 in 2022 regular season games against the 2020 Worlds champion, and dispatched its regional rival 3-2 in the Spring Playoffs. With both teams putting on strong showings in the Group Stage, this could certainly be another closely-fought contest.

Finally, we have DRX taking on reigning Worlds champion EDward Gaming. While the pair don’t necessarily have a score to settle, it is a matchup that shouldn’t be missed. EDG will be looking to cling onto its mantle against a surging DRX side that has fought tooth and nail all year to take its place on the Worlds stage.

Additionally, the matchup will see Kim ‘Deft’ Hyuk-kyu take on his old team – the team he was a part of when he was last at Worlds in North America all the way back in 2016. Of course, this means a matchup against old teammates Tian ‘Meiko’ Ye and Lee ‘Scout’ Ye-chan is on the cards.

You’ll be able to check out the first of these LoL Worlds matchups when Rogue and JD Gaming duke it out on October 20.
