The hits and flops of the first quarter of 2019

Bollywood is a world of rocketing highs and deadly lows. It changes more rapidly than seasons and that’s why there is stiff competition in the industry to prove one’s worth. And what better way to define it than box-office success. No matter what people say, box-office numbers play a huge role in an actor’s life in Bollywood, as the films that come to them post a box-office success changes by leaps and bounds. While 2018 remained rather stagnant when it came to box-office successes as only a few films made their mark at the cash counters, 2019 has proved to be quite the game changer. Just three months into the year and there have been several hits already.

January

Uri: The Surgical Strike

Box-office verdict - Blockbuster 

Directed by Aditya Dhar, Uri:The Surgical Strike came as a big surprise hit for Bollywood. Vicky Kaushal’s power-packed performance in the film won him several hearts and the actor was flooded with appreciation from every side. The film earned a total of about Rs 239 crore making it an out and out blockbuster. 

The Accidental Prime Minister

Box-office verdict - Below average 

Anupam Kher as ex- Prime Minister Manmohan Singh impressed with his look, but the film failed to create an impact at the box-office. It earned a total of over Rs 21 crore. Directed by Vijay Gutte the film did not have a lot of takers at the cash counters for sure but it recovered its cost. 

Why Cheat India

Box-office verdict - Disaster 

Directed by Soumik Sen, this film starring Emraan Hashmi saw a dull opening at the box-office. The film earned no more than around Rs 9 crore at the cash counters, putting it in the blink and miss category of films that released in January. 

Thackeray

Box-office verdict - Average 

A biopic based on the life on Bala Saheb Thackeray, the film had created a lot of buzz among the audience before its release. Nawazuddin Siddique’s performance in the film garnered a lot of praise. However, the film did not collect big bucks at the box-office and ended its run with Rs 19 crore in its kitty. 

Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi

Box-office verdict - Hit

After Uri: The Surgical Strike, Manikarnika came as the second clear hit film of 2019. Kangana Ranuat’s directorial debut and her captivating performance in the film had many takers at the box-office. The film earned over Rs 101 crores at the box-office. The audience and the critics loved Manikarnika and thus it secures a safe place in the list of hits of 2019.

Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga 

Box-office verdict - Average 

Directed by Shelly Chopra Dhar, Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga was liked by a section of moviegoers. The film has Sonam Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao and Anil Kapoor playing crucial parts and dealt with the subject of love among the same sex. Though the film did not do well at the box-office, it got mixed reviews and was even appreciated by a few critics. It earned over Rs 22 crore at the box-office in total. 

Gully Boy 

Box-office verdict - Hit

With Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in top form, the film was predicted to be a hit and that’s exactly what it turned out to be. Directed by Zoya Akhtar, the film revolved around the street-rapping scene in Mumbai and gave the audience some foot-tapping numbers. The film earned over Rs 135.3 crore at the box-office making it the third hit of 2019 after Uri: The Surgical Strike and Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi. 

Total Dhamaal 

Box-office verdict - Superhit 

Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit Nene and Ajay Devgn playing pivotal parts, this film tickled the funny bones of the audience and how! An out and out entertainer, the film went full house for several shows after its release. Directed by Indra Kumar, Total Dhamaal earned over Rs 150 crore at the box-office.

Luka Chuppi 

Box-office verdict - Hit

 After a long time, a rom com found acceptance in the audience. Hot songs, an interesting plot line and Kartik Aryan and Kriti Sanon’s chemistry made Luka Chuppi a winner at the box-office. The film collected over Rs 90 crores at the ticket window. 

Sonchiriya 

Box-office verdict - Disaster 

Sushant Singh Rajput and Bhumi Pednekar in rustic and rugged avatars could not bring the audience to the theatres as Sonchiriya failed to impress the viewers. The film earned no more that around Rs 5.5 crore at the box-office. Directed by Abhishek Chaubey, the film was about the dacoits of Chambal. 

Badla 

Box-office verdict - Blockbuster

Sujoy Ghosh is known for making films that keep the audience engrossed till the last minute. Amitabh Bachchan and Tappsee Pannu starrer Badla was just that. It held the audience till the end and made them experience a thriller that kept them involved. Badla has earned over  Rs 85 crores at the box-office till now and that’s massive profit considering the film is made on a budget of only Rs 21 crores. 

Kesari 

Box-office verdict - Hit

Based on the Battle of Saragarhi, Akshay Kumar’s Kesari is the latest film to enter the 100 crore club. The film received rave reviews from the critics and is being loved by the audience too. Its collections stand at an impressive Rs 125. 01 crore currently and is increasing with each passing day. The lifetime collection of the film will go past Rs 140 crores. 

The latest releases, Notebook and Junglee, are slowly picking up pace and their fate will only be decided in a few days.  Keep watching this space for more on Bollywood.
